The recorder has one or more heads (2,3) for digital signals mounted on a rotating head wheel (1). Sensors and an encoder show the angles of the head wheel. The encoder (22,23) has two adjacent electrical conductors (12,13) carrying currents in opposite directions. The conductors are parallel to the axis (25) of rotation of the head wheel. The conductors may form two loops making a V-shaped arrangement with one another. Alternatively, the encoder may have one conductor loop making a V-shaped arrangement.
