Workpiece transport system using self-propelled carriages

The workpiece transport system has a guide track (11) extending between loading and unloading stations and/or successive work stations, along which self propelled transport carriages (14) are displaced. Each carriage (14) has an electric drive operated from a battery (33) with charging contacts (16) brought into contact with corresp. contacts at a charging station. A straight section (17) of the guide track (11) has a current rail (18) extending along it, contacted by a current take off (19) mounted on the carriage (14), for direct operation of the drive, or for recharging the battery (33).
