A church candle has a solid wax body (3) and a wick holder (6) consisting of a cylinder which fits over the candle body and has an inward facing flange (2). This flange covers the outward edge of the candle body and is connected to the wick holder. The wick holder has at least two projections on which the wick is fixed. The wick holder rests directly on the candle body. The candle has a central vertical opening (4). The candle and wick holder can be of various shapes, and the candle body may be located in an open-topped casing.
