A surface of a non-metal workpiece is treated by dispersing grain size particles (2) of metal or non-metal into the outer layer of the workpiece during its prodn. and exposing part of the particles at the surface by grinding or blasting. USE/ADVANTAGE - The particles are used as an intermediate layer and contact layer for a metallic or non-metallic coating (4) or can act directly to improve some surface property such as lubrication, wear resistance etc. Esp. useful for coating fibre-reinforced plastics. Improves the adhesion of the coating layer or avoids the need for a final coating.
