The carriages are moved along a guide rail network, with control effected via sensors (30,52,53) and switching devices (50,54) for detecting travel data and external signals fed to a microprocessor (10). The microprocessor (10) is coupled to the drive (12) and braking systems for the carriage used for obtaining the shortest possible transport time, with close following of the carriages one behind the other. Pref. the microprocessor (10) evaluates the mass of the carriage to control the acceleration or deceleration.
