The invention concerns a device for arranging articles such as bottles or cans into groups or for splitting the groups into separate articles. The articles (62) are transported on a conveyor belt (64) over a rotor which is mounted on a shaft (32). The shaft (32) is so mounted that its distance from the conveyor belt (64) can be varied. The rotor has a central block (68) with holes which form guides for sliding arms. These arms are moved radially by means of a guide rail (66) as the rotor rotates. The rotor is driven at a speed which fluctuates continuously in a defined manner. As the rotor rotates the outer end of each arm in turn passes through a slot in the conveyor belt and accelerates a group of articles (62) so that they are separated from the following stream of articles.
