PURPOSE:To electrochemically reduce dinitrogen monoxide to nitrogen in an electrolyte-containing aqueous solution by using a metal complex of macrocyclic polyamine represented by a specific general formula as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Dinitrogen monoxide is electrochemically reduced to nitrogen in an electrolyte-containing aqueous solution in the presence of a metal complex of macrocyclic polyamine represented by general formula I [wherein (n) is an integer of 9-12, M is Ni, Co, Cu, W, Mo or Fe, X is a monovalent-trivalent anion and (r) and (m) are a positive integer and satisfy (valency of M) X r = (valency of X) X m]. In electrolytic reduction reaction, an inorg. salt such as LiCl, NaCl or KCl is used as a support electrolyte and an aqueous solution of this inorg. salt is used. As an electrode, mercury or nickel is used and potential of -0.5--0.2V is applied to a cathode and reaction temp. is set to 0-60 deg.C.
|
