Appts. for continuously measuring the density of mud in the well of a dredger comprises at least one vertically oriented, sealed housing of generally channel-shaped horizontal cross-section, inside which a carriage moves up and down along rails (13). The carriage supports a gamma-ray source (60) and a scintillation counter system (67), on opposite sides of the channel (2) defined by the housing cross-section, which enables the density of mud within channel (2) to be monitored in terms of gamma-ray absorption. The housing is mounted vertically in the well, submerged in the mud.
