Derivatives of porphyrin useful in photodynamic therapy

Compounds which are long wavelength-absorbing derivatives of porphyrinone nuclei are described which are useful in photodynamic therapy and related technologies. These compounds contain the porphyrin nucleus beta-substituted with alkyl and/or omega-carboxyalkyl substituents wherein the ring system contains at least one exocyclic double bond in which the exocyclic participant is selected from the group consisting of =S, =CR'2, and NR''.
