[Class 53] A vent plug is provided with a rubber or other resilient diaphragm o which closes an opening k in the plug when the battery is tilted but which is kept away from the opening when the battery is upright by a loose weight f resting on a plunger m. The latter is fluted and the diaphragm is provided with openings s to allow gas. to escape and to allow any liquid passing into the interior of the plug to drain back into the battery. Grooves or channels j may also be provided for the same purpose. The plug may be made of three moulded parts a, b, c and the diaphragm o may be gripped between the parts a, b as shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 7 shows a modification in which the diaphragm is provided with a beaded edge q engaging a groove in the member b. The outlet g may be provided with a seating n to receive the weight f when the battery is inverted and so prevent liquid from escaping. A space i receives any liquid in the plug when the battery is inverted. The weight f may consist of a ball, as shown, or of a truncated cone, and the diaphragm o may be made of rubber. Slots u in the part a of the plug, or wicks t as shown in Fig. 9, may be provided to aid the return of liquid in the plug to the battery. |
