METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR HYBRID CODING FOR MOVING PICTURE

PURPOSE:To improve the prediction efficiency of a picture with respect to an input picture by selecting adaptively pictures by the waveform coding method such as the moving compensation prediction and the model base coding method based on the 3-dimension model so as to obtain a predicted picture. CONSTITUTION:The method is provided with a model base coding picture synthesis section 3 using a decoded picture of a preceding frame stored in a frame memory section 4, a current input picture and a 3-dimension model of an object so as to synthesize the object picture, a waveform coding prediction section 2 using the current input picture and an output from the frame memory section to apply movement compensation prediction of the picture and a picture comparison section 5 comparing the output of the picture synthesis process and the output of the picture prediction process with the current input picture respectively and outputting the picture with a small difference. Then the waveform coding prediction method and the model base coding synthesis method are selected adaptively. Thus, the prediction efficiency is improved and the discontinuous part of the picture signal in the predicted picture is made smooth and the result coding efficiency is improved.
