Alcohols contg. 2-methylphenyl or 2-methoxyphenyl gps., of formula (I) are claimed. 2-Metrhyl-3-(2-methylphenyl)-propanol-1-ol (II) is excluded. R = Me or methoxy if R1 = H; or R = Me if R1 = Me; and R1 = H or Me. 2-Methyl-3- (2-methoxyphenyl) propan-1-ol (III) and (II) are prepd. by (i) reacting 2-methyl- or 2-methoxy-benzaldehyde with propionaldehyde in presence of a base (NaOH or KOH) at -5 to 80 deg.C, in a polar solvent (e.g. an alcohol), followed by hydrogenation of the prod., esp. with H2, using Pd/C or Raney Ni as catalyst, and sepn. of the prod. by fractional distn., or (ii) reacting 2-methyl- or 2-methoxy-benzyl chloride with diethyl methylmalonate at 70-120 deg.C in presence of a base, e.g. Na2CO3, saponification of the prod. with a base, e.g. NaOH or KOH, decarboxylation at 120-150 deg.C, opt. esterification and hydrogenation with Li Al hydride or H2 in presence of a catalyst.
