Blowing agent (I) for the prodn. of foams and foamed prods. comprises hydrogen stored in hydrides, which is released when the hydride is exposed to heat and/or low pressure, thus producing the required increase in vol. with formation of pores. Pref. hydride material (II) is powdered metal at metalloid hydride (II) is homogeneously mixed with the substances to be foamed (III); pref. (II) and (III) are stored separately and only mixed when the foam is to be produced. USE/ADVANTAGE - Provides a non-CFC blowing agent which is harmless to the environment and can be used under the most variable conditions for the prodn. of various foamed prod. (I) contain large amts. of stored hydrogen, and residual hydride does not damage properties of the foam; the hydrogen rapidly diffuses out of the foam, leaving a material with low thermal conductivity. Used in e.g. structural or insulating-foam, foamed rubber, expanded polystyrene, porous concrete, etc.
