A method for transporting material (34), situated in a delivery field (5) of a device for cutting stacked sheet material and cut into transverse strips (32), to a feeding field (3) of the device for the purpose of cutting this material into longitudinal strips is proposed, the device being provided with a cutting table (1) with a table surface (2) which has a working field (4), above which are situated a cutting knife and a pressing beam, behind this the feeding field (3) for receiving the material to be cut and in front of this the delivery field (5) for receiving the cut material, and also with an advancing device (8), assigned to the feeding field, for the material to be cut. To permit a work flow during the longitudinal cutting of material following its transverse cutting, it is proposed that the material (34) existing in transverse strips (32) be moved from the delivery field (5) to a thin-walled, plate-like transporting base (29), and the transporting base (29) together with the material (34) be supplied, via at least one table (11, 15) which is arranged at the side of the device and the table surface (13, 16) of which can be arranged at the same level as that of the cutting table (1) of the device, to the feeding field (3) of the device and the transporting base (29) be removed there in alignment with respect to the feeding field (3), the material being turned from the transverse direction into the longitudinal direction during the movement to the transporting base (29) or together with the transporting base (29) or after removal of the transporting base (29). The material (34) to be cut is thus guided past the actual cutting device, for which purpose at least one table (11, 15) is arranged at the side of the cutting device in the device according to the invention.
