An electrical signal from an engine temp. sensor (1) is applied to a functional unit (2) which delays generator excitation in accordance with a warm-up characteristic stored in a memory (3). This characteristic may be entered manually or pref. through a process of integration in the excitation circuit. A time-dependent voltage is compared (4) with a preset limit, at which the excitation is switched on (5). ADVANTAGE - Fraction of engine power output consumed by generator during warm-up is nullified, saving 1 kW or more and minimising running while lubricant viscosity is high.
