The optical scanning device has a photoelectric transducer fastened to the carriage of a mechanical printer, its output being connected via an interface (8) of the printer to a processing unit. The unit possesses a matching element (2), an amplifier (3) and an A-D converter (4) in series, the output of this being extended to a change-over switch (5). Another switch (6) siwthces off the printing head hammer being used at that instant. The outputs and a first group of inputs of the change-over switch are connected to the interface for transmitting the state of the printer and another group of its inputs to the corresp. outputs of the and converter and this has its control input connected to the strobe terminal of the interface. The select terminal is extended to the control terminal fo the change-over switch and also that of the other switch, for switching off the hammer. USE/ADVANTAGE - Material can be scanned without changing from a printing to read-out head.
