PHOSPHORUS OXYCHLORIDE TO EPYCHLORHYDRIN ADDITIONING COMPOUNDS PREPARATION PROCESS

Addn. salts of epichlorohydrin are prepd. from epichlorohydrin and phosphorus oxychloride in the presence of tri:ethanolamine catalyst and phosphorus-tri:chloride initiator. Epichlorohydrin is used both as reactant and reaction medium. A 7-36% excess is used over and above a required stoichiometric ratio of 3:1 with phosphorus oxychloride. The catalyst is either added with phosphorus-oxy-chloride and the initiator is mixed pref. in epichlorohydrin. The use of only 7% excess of epichlorohydrin reduces catalyst demand on facilitates removal of the remaining excess epichlorohydrin at the completion of the reaction. Fields are quantitative. The prod. acid number is 0.3-1 mg. koh/g. Starting cpds. are 96-98% pure.
