Process for the preparation of cationic phthalocyanine dyes of formula I in which the symbols are defined as in the description. Comprises reacting two compounds of formula II with one compound donating "Y" to quaternise the -NR5R6 group of each compound II. The compound so obtained and their mixtures are used for the dyeing or printing of organic substrates containing hydroxy or nitrogen groups. <IMAGE>
