PURPOSE:To obtain the objective compound with a high catalyst activity from the initial period of reaction by alternately repeating reaction treatment of the catalyst with a raw material and oxidation treatment thereof with oxygen before the reaction in producing the subject compound from ethylene glycol using a specific copper- and zinc-based catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Glycolaldehyde useful as a raw material for alpha-amino acids, medicines, agricultural chemicals, photographic chemicals, special polymers, etc., and as a textile treating agent, odorant and deodorant is produced from ethylene glycol using a copper- and zinc-based catalyst containing 0.3-3 pts.wt. zinc expressed in terms of zinc oxide based on 1 pt.wt. copper expressed in terms of copper oxide. In the process, reaction treatment of the catalyst with the ethylene glycol and oxidation treatment thereof with oxygen are alternatively repeated before the reaction to remarkably increase the catalyst activity in a short time and afford the objective compound with a high catalyst activity from the initial period of the reaction in high selectivity without any deterioration in activity and selectivity with advance of the reaction. |
