New 1,3-dioxane derivates have the formula (I), in which Q is CHalogen1H3-1, CnH2n+1-O- or C2H2n+1-CH=CH-, whereas halogen is F or CL; 1 is 1, 2 or 3 and n is 0 to 5, r is 0 to 5, X = X' = 0 and Y = Y' = 0 CH2 or X = X' = CH2 and Y = Y' = O, Z<1> and Z<2> represent independently from each other -C2H4- or a simple link; A<1> is trans-1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-phenylene, 3-fluor-1,4-phenylene or 3,5-difluor-1,4-phenylene, m is 0, 1 or 2, X is F, Cl, -CF3, -CN, -OCF3 or -OCF2 and Y and Z represent independently from each other H or F. These derivates are useful as components of liquid crystal media.
