Piston with passageways for cooling medium - is made in two parts which are welded together

A piston with cooling pasageways in its crown, is made from two main parts. The first first (1) is formed from a cylindrical slab in which a combustion chamber (3) is formed in its upper face and an annular groove (4) in its lower face. The lower face also has curved ribs (5) adjoining the annular groove (4). A steel plate (6) with curved slots (6c) is placed against the underside of the first part (1). The second part (2) is machined from a cylindrical block with a circular wall (2a) on its upper face. This second part is then welded to the first part with the plate (6) trapped between the two parts. The welded assembly is then machined to form the piston ring grooves (10) and the gudgeon pin bores (8). USE - Pistons.
