A carrier plate is located above the print plate, the paper being fed between them. A guide plate is fixed to the carrier and has a slot located traversely to the direction of paper feed. With the slot is a carrier on which is mounted an opto-electrical sensor. A carriage moves on guide bars. Movement of the sensor across the print line is provided by a lever pivoted at one end and moved by an electric motor via gearing. Sensor outputs are compared with command values to identify error conditions.
