The sorting device supplies the received banknotes to a checking device which determines its value, to allow the banknote to be fed to the respective compartment. The handling of the banknotes is effected via independant transport and positioning devices (15,17), each with its own drive motor (16,18) coupled to a control device supplied with signals identifying the accepted banknotes. The banknotes are transported between two opposing endless bands (13,14) the transport device (15) brought into a given position via the positioning device (17).
