A buffer, in particular for tracked vehicles, has a casing 1 with a securing flange 2 at the rear end and a plunger 4, fitted providing a buffer plate 17, wherein resilient means, for example, a set of springs is accommodated within the buffer. The casing 1 has at least two shoulders 3 and the plunger 4 has continuous axial recesses 5 for receiving the shoulders 3 and also axial recesses 6 in communication with the recesses 5 and which extend over a proportion of the length of the plunger 4. In fitting the plunger to the casing, shoulders 3 are guided along the length of recesses 5, and the plunger 4 turned (before plate 17 is fitted in the embodiment shown) so that shoulders 3 enter recesses 6. The plunger is thus secured against rotation relative to the casing, and an abutment stop 8 limits relative axial movement. <IMAGE>
