A valve (14) operation is controlled dependent upon the operating rating of the internal combustion engine (1) in question, the valve being incorporated in the lubricant conduit (15) for oil feed to the bearings (9) of an exhaust gas turbocharger which can be switched on and off. - When the turbocharger is switched on, the valve releases oil flow prior to the commencement of the charger main run. The entry of pressure medium for operation of positioning cylinders (18,19) of cut-off mechanisms (4,5) for the main run of the turbocharger is only released by a further valve (17) if an adequate lubricant pressure is present in the bearings (9).
