The index memory has a number of storage locations in which the titles of the pieces recorded on the inserted compact disc are entered. When more titles are stored on the contents index of the disc than the number of available storage locations in the memory, the differences between the starting points of the successive titles and stored instead of the starting points of the individual titles, for improved utilisation of the available storage capacity. Pref. the start point of the first title is stored, followed by the stored differences between the start points of each pair of successive titles.
