The sound generator (10) is connected to the lead to be located. The electrical signal appts (15) is provides with at least one exchangeable search probe (22). The latter id designed as an active sensor regarding to e.m. waves. The probe comprises an oscillation circuit with a following demodulator and amplifier. It is battery powered . An additional exchangeable search probe (23) is inductive, magnetic field sensitive and/or capacitative electo-field sensitive. The probe (22) is a separate component connected to the signal appts via an electrical measuring lead (19). The probe is held on a rod or pipe shaped retainer (21) which can be coupled to an extension piece (24). USE/ADVANTAGE - Using simple probe not only the course of a lead but also the exact position of breaks, lead ends, short circuits, and earth leaks can be registered. Depth location improved.
