The lower end of the steering column is in two parts. The top part (1) is hollow and contains torsion element (11) fixed rigidly to it by a pin (12). The other end of the torsion element is fixed in a similar manner to the worm end (2) of the steering column by a pin. The worm end operates in a thread of a piston (13), slidably fitted in a cylinder (10) with pressure chambers (16,17) connected by pipes (34,35) to hydraulic control valve (19). Due to the torsion element the two parts (1,2) perform a relative rotation, when the steering wheel is operated and a bushing (3) with flanged part (4) slides on the first part. Thus the control valve is operated and supplies hydraulic fluid to the appropriate side of the cylinder, supporting its motion initiated by the worm end.
