<p>Novel tretra-substituted methane derivatives of the general formula C[-Sp-M-R]4 in which the radicals -Sp-M-R- are the same or different and the symbol Sp standing for a spacer group represents independently an unsubstituted or singly halogen, -CN or -CF3-substituted alkylene or alkenylene radical with 1 to 12 carbon atoms in which one or two non-adjacent CH2 groups may be replaced by -O-, -CO-, -COO-, -OOC-, -CONH- or -OCOO-, or a single bond; and R is hydrogen, halogen, -CN, -CF3, -OCF3, -NO2, -N(CH3)2, an unsubstituted, a single or multiple -CN, -NH2, -CF3 or halogen-substituted, straight or branched-chain alkyl radical or an alkenyl radical with 1 to 12 carbon atoms, whereby, in these radicals, one or more non-adjacent CH2 groups may be replaced by the radicals -O-, -CO-, -OOC-, -COO- or OCOO-; and M stands for a mesogenic group. Owing to their liquid crystal properties, the novel compounds are eminently suitable for use in liquid crystalline media.</p> |
