The method is characterized in that, for a given strain-hardening in the initial wire, heat treatment is carried out for a time and at a temperature such that the resulting steel wire has a mechanical breaking strength (Rm) greater than 850 MPa and a structure with a low free ferrite content. The method is useful in particular for manufacturing H2S-compatible steel wires.
