Process for the preparation of a detergent composition or fabric softener containing coated perfume particles

A process is described for the preparation of a detergent composition or fabric softener characterized in that there are incorporated in the composition coated perfume particles having an average size after coating of less than 350 microns, and preferably not more than 150 microns, the said particles containing between 5% and 50% by weight of a perfume dispersed in 50% to 95% by weight of a supporting material comprising a fatty alcohol or a non-polymeric solid fatty ester or their mixtures having a molecular weight between 100 and 500 and a melting point between 37 degree C and 80 degree C, the said alcohol or ester being substantially insoluble in water, and the said particles having a friable coating which is substantially insoluble in water on their outer surfaces. The perfume particles comprise perfume dispersed in certain non-polymeric supporting materials which are insoluble in water and encapsulated in a protective coat of coating of a friable coating material. The coated particles preserve and protect perfumes which are subject to degradation or loss on storage and in cleaning compounds. In use break-up of the surface coating and the perfume/underlying support particles efficiently delivers a large quantity of types of perfume to fabrics or other surfaces.
