<p>High-definition television pictures are divided into identical blocks, each block being applied to several parallel coding paths employing different coding modes, a first of which has high spatial resolution and employs spatial-temporal filtering techniques, and at least one other has reduced spatial resolution and enhanced temporal resolution. A selection is made before transmission between the results of the coding modes, by comparison between each picture block reconstituted from the coded pictures and the respective source picture block. The source picture blocks are subjected, but only before comparison with the respective blocks reconstituted after coding by the first mode, to a spatial filtering bringing in several neighbouring points from the whole of the picture in the block. <IMAGE></p> |
