PURPOSE:To make the diameter of an adjusting mechanism part small by displac ing an inner column provided inside an outer column axially by an adjusting cylinder provided inside the outer column in order to expand a steering column. CONSTITUTION:In a cylindrical outer column 8 formed by connecting an upper column 9 and a lower column 10 by a bracket 11, an inner column 13 is fitted into the upper column 9 displaceablly only in the axial direction, while a steer ing shaft 18 is rotatably inserted into the inner column 13 through bearings 22, 23. This steering shaft 18 is vertically divided into two parts, and both shaft parts 19, 20 are spline-connected. A female screw part 24 formed at the lower end part inner peripheral surface of the inner column 13 is then screwed with a male screw part 25 formed at the upper end part outer peripheral surface of an adjusting cylinder 16, and a worm gear 27 on the output shaft of an electric motor is meshed with a worm wheel 26 provided at the adjusting cylin der 16 so as to enable the adjustment of a steering column length. |
