PURPOSE:To obtain the title ceramics with high toughness, esp. suitable for tools by homogeneous incorporating specific needle Al2O3 in a ceramics compris ing an SiC component and Al2O3 component. CONSTITUTION:The objective ceramics can be obtained by homogeneously incorporating acicular Al2O3>=1.5 in aspect ratio in a ceramics comprising 3-50vol.% of a SiC component and 50-97vol.% of Al2O3 component. Incorporation of said acicular Al2O3 will substantially improve the toughness of the present ceramics, a sintered compact while retaining the wear resistance and inertness to e.g. iron inherent in Al2O3. The SiC component is made up of granules (or part of them being needle granules), contributing to suppressing the granular growth of the Al2O3 component in sintering as well as enhancing the mechanical strength of the final sintered compact itself. |
