The present invention relates to a device of the type comprising a support mandrel (7) and at least one movable gripper capable of seizing the tubing (4) and in folding it up concentrically on itself in order to obtain a sleeve consisting of a defined number of superimposed folds (29). The gripper (18) consists of two elements (24, 25) external to the tubing (4) and arranged facing each other, one (24) of which can move with respect to the other (25) and between which can be inserted a portion of continuous tubing (4) under the axial thrust of an internal peripheral sizing device (26), inserted between the elements of the gripper (18), thereby entraining with it the said portion of tubing (4) and including at least one fork (28) capable of allowing one of the elements of the gripper (18) to pass when the gripper is closed over the portion of tubing (4) lying there and constituting one end of a fold (29a) to be formed. <IMAGE>
