In a clutch (10) with a stationary electromagnet (46) to couple an ar- mature (56) to a rotor (12), the rotor has inner and outer cylindrical, portions (14, 24) connected at one end by an annular clutch portion (16) with inner and outer arcuate slots ( 18, 22) which extend through the clutch portion (1 6) from radial locations at the clutching surface (60) to closer radial locatio ns on the other side of the portion (16). The portion (24) may have on its oute r surface either a poly V groove (42), or a V groove (472), or gear teeth (166 ).
