In a process for charging pig iron, scrap or ore to a melting furnace (1) or melting reduction furnace (10), the charge is preheated before feeding into the furnace (1, 10). Here, before being fed in, the charge is held with the use of an electromagnetic field until a predetermined temperature is reached. The electromagnetic holding device (3) is here designed, for example, as a coil or annular magnet.
