Base composition for water-based drilling muds which makes it possible to limit the number and the quantity of the other constituents of the mud. Besides the base solvent, fresh water, sea water or salt water, the base composition contains scleroglucan as viscosity promoter, the mycelium which has produced it and bentonite or an equivalent in limited quantity.
