PURPOSE:To obtain dihydric phenols such as catechol and hydroquinone in high yield and to obtain an o-nucleushydroxylated compound in high selectivity by reacting a phenolic compound with a peroxide in the presence of a compound having thioamide group. CONSTITUTION:A dihydric phenol such as catechol and hydroquinone useful as a raw material for pharmaceuticals, agricultural chemicals, perfumes, etc., is produced by reacting a phenolic compound with a peroxide (preferably hydrogen peroxide) in the presence of a catalyst. In the above process, the yield of the dihydric phenol and the selectivity of an o-nucleushydroxylated compound can be increased by using a compound having thioamide group, preferably a compound of formula I or II (R1 to R7 are H, 1-4C alkyl or aryl) as a catalyst in an amount of 0.0001-1.0mol (preferably 0.001-0.01mol) based on 1 mol of the peroxide. |
