PURPOSE:To obtain a silicon carbide sintered body having high mechanical strength as well as satisfactory oxidation resistance by forming a surface coating layer of a composite material consisting of a fibrous material and a matrix. CONSTITUTION:A surface coating layer of a composite material consisting of 2-70vol.%, preferably 5-40vol.% fibrous material of SiC having 0.5-10mum diameter and an Si3N4 matrix is formed on the surface of an SiC sintered body as a substrate in 10-1,000mum, preferably 20-300mum thickness to obtain an SiC sintered body useful for high temp. structural members such as valves and piston rings of an internal-combustion engine and gas turbine blades. |
