PURPOSE:To prepare the subject non-twisted yarn useful for preventing the travel of water in a communication cable by coating a non-twisted yarn with a water-swellable polymer to adhere filaments to each other. CONSTITUTION:A non-twisted yarn comprising substantially non-twisted synthetic filaments such as polyester filaments is immersed in a dispersion of a water- swellable polymer, preferably a polymer prepared by neutralizing an addition- polymer of thioglycolic acid, maleic anhydride, acrylic acid, etc., to the double bond of polystyrene.polybutadiene.polystyrene block copolymer, in an organic solvent (e.g. acetone or methylethylketone), and subsequently dried. When contacting with water, the non-twisted yarn swells to fill the space and simultaneously form a filter net to perfectly prevent the travel of the water in a cable, thereby useful for preventing the travel of water in optical fiber cables or electrical wire cables. |
