The sinker according to the invention is intended to be fitted to the end of a fishing line in order to carry out depth sounding. It consists of a pair of lead jaws (7), which form a shell of sufficient capacity to enclose a hook and possibly its bait. These jaws are articulated together and thus continuously subject to the action of an elastic return element. The two identical jaws (7) include, distributed on either side of the articulation, a half-shell and an operating means in the form of a tab (13). The elastic return means apply a constant pressure to the two shells so as to keep them closed in the normal position; these means consist of an O-ring (9), made of rubber for example, inserted into a circular groove (19) provided on the jaws (7), in proximity to the articulation (15) and on the side opposite that of the operating tabs (13), with respect to the said articulation (15). <IMAGE>
