A dust suppression system (100) is particularly designed for the control of dust generated by a self-propelled, on-site, shoulder ballast cleaning machine (10). The shoulder ballast cleaning machine (10) scoops up the stone ballast (B) of a railroad track bed (30) separates the ballast (B) from dirt and debris, and replaces the ballast (B) along the shoulder of the track bed (30). The dust suppression system (100) includes a main pressure line (102) extending along the length of the shoulder ballast cleaning machine (10) and a plurality of branch lines (106, 108, 110, 112, 114, 116, 118, 120, 122) connecting the main line (102) to spray assemblies positioned on the shoulder ballast cleaning machine (10) at areas of primary dust generation. The various assemblies provide a liquid spray pattern to moisten the airborne dust and debris, neutralizing the static electricity charge of the dust and debris, and/or increasing the particulate weight, and causing the dust and debris to rapidly settle. Each branch distribution line (106, 108, 110, 112, 114, 116, 118, 120, 122) includes a filter (124), a globe valve (128) for adjusting the flow of water to each individual spray assembly, and a remotely actuated solenoid (126) for selectively connecting and disconnecting the branch line (106, 108, 110, 112, 114, 116, 118, 120, 122) to the main line (102). |
