The piston/cylinder unit (1) defines a cylindrical brewing chamber (6) into which the piston (25) can be inserted and sealed at the opposite end by a closure plate (10) which can be pivoted out of the way. Separate stepping motors (32,40) are used to displace the piston and control the movement of the closure plate (10), with a common control for both motors. Alternatively the piston is displaced by a normal electric motor with the counter force acting on the motor being monitored, to allow the motor to be disconnected when the press reaches a given value.
