Surface smoothers with resin, hardener or filler packs are useful for coating, smoothing, structuring and finishing to size, preferably with plastic coatings in the semi-liquid state, using a separating agent incorporated in the surface of the coating, where it remains as an integral constituent of the coating material. The surface smoothers are guided manually or in appliances or machines and consist mainly of an electrostatically chargeable material. The surface smoothers and coating materials in the reservoir packs form a unit in this process, because the shape, type and mode of utilization of the surface smoothers and the constituents of the coating material have a marked reciprocal influence.
