The system includes a hydrogen/oxygen generator wherein a direct current voltage is applied to a pair of non-oxidising plates immersed in water as described in EP0111573. Hydrogen gas from the generator is fed via a mixing chamber and lines to a further mixing chamber wherein the hydrogen gas is mixed with controlled amts. of air. The resultant hydrogen/air mixt. is fed to burner wherein the mixt. is ignited by spark plug so as to drive a piston. Exhaust gases from the burner are cooled in chamber and mixed with fresh hydrogen in chamber so as to control the temperature and velocity thereof.
