The stage switching system has a fine stage winding (16), tappings (1-15) selected using two arms, and a load switch with vacuum switching tubes. Each phase has only one vacuum switching tube. The tubes have two moving contacts (26,27) between two fixed contacts (22,23). One moving contact (26) is connected via a changeover resistor (40) to one of the two selection arms (18). The other moving contact is connected to a load line (39). Each of the fixed contacts is connected to one of the selection arms. The vacuum tubes are made from coaxial rotationally-symmetric parts.
