A camshaft angular position sensor (LG) produces a static position signal consisting of a binary 1 and a zero for consecutive revolutions of the crankshaft, which has its own position sensor (PG) and reference mark (RM). A synchronisation reference pulse is produced during each revolution with its trailing edge 84 deg. in advance of TDC in a reference cylinder. A conventional controller (M) sends injection and ignition commands to the engine (BKM). The cylinders are grouped to avoid injection into open inlet valves, or double injection on transition to the normal sequential cycle when the starting phase is accomplished.
