This is a method, with associated equipment, for extinguishing burning oil-wells by surrounding the burning areas with a material that prevents or restricts the entry of air. Variants claimed provide for many alternative types of materials to be used, including flexible materials, textiles, inherently-stable materials, and double-walled materials. A number of different arrangements for the shape, support, erection, and suspension (for transport or operation) are claimed, e.g. as a bell, pyramid, cone or chimney hanging from an aircraft, captive balloon, remotely-controlled helicopter, or crane. USE/ADVANTAGE - The method offers a means of extinguishing oil-well fires quickly, without high equipment-costs, and without excessive danger or destruction.
