Bobbins in a spinning plant are taken from the spinning machines, placed on bobbin support plates and taken to a bobbin winding machine. On leaving this machine, each bobbin in a suspended transport basket, from which it is later taken and again placed on a bobbin support plate which is then brought to a bobbin testing station. Pref. sensing and data storage systems are provided in the first bobbin support plate, the transport basket (53) and second bobbin support plate (T), a writing device (74) is provided for marking the machine and bobbin position numbers on the transport basket (53) when the bobbin is loaded into it, a reading and writing device (75) be provided for transferring this information to the second bobbin support plate (T) when the bobbin is unloaded, and a visual marking device be provided for placing the transferred data onto each finished bobbin. The support plates are made of non-conducting material, and have a disc-shaped base and a spindle on which the bobbin is placed. A ring-shaped recess on the upper surface of the base contains an iron element and a rubber magnetic strip which acts as a data storage medium. When a production or quality problem occurs in the spinning plant, or a quality problem arises in downstream processes such as weaving or dying, the origin and path of the bobbin in question can be determined so that corrective measures can be quickly applied.
